Servant Event – St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mt. Prospect, IL
The week of March 21-27, YLM welcomed a family group of twenty from Mt. Prospect, IL, a suburb of Chicago. They arrived on Friday evening but wanted us to assign them work projects for Saturday, so one crew tackled the tool shed (which wound up becoming a weeklong project) and another helped Isabel sort clothing in the thrift store.
During the week, the group was likewise divided, half building an over-roof on the women’s bathroom in building #12 here on the mission’s premises and the other half continuing work on the Morales home in Sparks. The over-roof crew accomplished their goal under the watchful eye of Genaro, and it is not to be forgotten that some of those who stayed back at the ranch all week worked not on the roof but in the shed, turning chaos into glorious organization, labels and all! Let’s hope it stays that way! Meanwhile, significant improvements were made inside and out to Maria and Homero’s trailer. The exterior was painted “Earthy Cane” with “Rum Raisin” trim, a section of the living room floor was braced and re-tiled, and the bathroom in the master bedroom is now functional…50 + feet of PVC later! Perhaps the most noticeable change, however, is the 2.5 TONS of trash missing from the yard…special thanks to one group member who sprang to rent a Penske truck for the day!
A first that took place this week was hosting a VBS at the Community Center in Sparks. Fewer children than expected were in attendance, but those who did come had a great time singing, making crafts, eating snacks, playing games, and, most importantly, learning about Jesus. The 3-day event featured Bible stories about Jesus calling his disciples to be fishers of men, Jesus walking on water, and Jesus calming the storm. YLM is hopeful that what this group was able to accomplish is only the beginning of many more outreach efforts to the almost 3000 people who live in the Sparks Colonia.
